Finding The Time To Practice: Voice Exercises & Singing Tips You Should Try

You’re not alone. In this fast-paced world, every minute counts. And sometimes, as singers, finding the time to warm-up and train our voices, can often be quite challenging.


But: as singers, we have one of the most unique instruments in the world.

We can take our instrument with us wherever we go.

This is great because it gives us the ability to practise anywhere! We can practise on the go if we need to.


And for those of us with busy schedules, this is amazing news.


Why Are Vocal Exercises so Important?

Practising the right vocal exercises for your specific vocal needs on a daily basis is important for your overall vocal development.

Singing alone without the vocal exercises will not be enough, as exercises can take a voice through muscle movement that singing alone cannot.

I like to think of vocal exercises as going to the gym on my voice - training and working it out.

Practising your voice exercises on a regular basis will:

● Prevent vocal injury

● Reinforce good vocal habits

● Increase vocal stamina

● Increase longevity

● Increase vocal freedom

● Help with the overall development of your voice

Commit to What You Can When Learning How to Sing and Train Your Voice

When we set ourselves unrealistic practice goals, it can sometimes overwhelm us so much that we actually end up doing nothing at all.


Does that ever happen to you?


This is why doing a little bit of practice every day is crucial. Even the tiniest of vocal exercises and practice is better than nothing!


If you’re in the middle of a busy season in your life and you’re finding it hard to find the time to practise, ask yourself this:


How much time can I commit to practising each day?


If all you have is 10-15 minutes a day, then that is fine for a season - at least you’re committing to doing some practice!


Make your vocal warm-ups a part of your daily routine - if only just for a few minutes. You will see your vocals improve amazingly! (Read this blog post to learn more about how to add vocal warm-ups and exercises to your daily routine.)


So, with this in mind, here are a few singing tips on some unconventional places where you can practise on the go!


Unconventional Places To Practise Your Vocal Exercises

In the Shower

Believe it or not, vocalising in the shower is one of the best ways to practise and work those vocal cords!

The acoustics are usually great in the shower room and the steam from the shower creates a humid environment which is ideal for singing.

Start your day off right by starting your vocal practices in the morning with some gentle humming in the shower.


On the Train/Tube

The train/tube isn’t exactly the best place to start belting out your vocals, but you can do some straw exercises and stretch on the train. (Straw exercises help the voice to function with more ease and less muscular effort. The straw exercise is a great one to do on the train as it’s not too loud. I often do it when the train is moving so it doesn't disturb anyone.


Walking Down the Street

Now’s the time to get loud!

When you’re walking down the street, start off with some lip trills. Then you can add in a few other exercises.


Before I begin to sing, I like to lip trill or straw through a song melody. And sometimes, depending on where my voice is at, I may even work through an entire song by going back and forth between strawing a line and then singing a line.


In the Car

We’ve all been there, driving along the street and stopping at a light only to look at the car beside us and see the driver or passenger singing at the top of their lungs.

Well, now you can be one of those people!

For safety reasons, I would only advise that you do this if you are the passenger and not the driver!

You can go as loud as you want in the car and even make the goofiest rockstar moves. No one to impress but yourself, right?!


One Quick Thought

The whole point of developing vocal technique is so that you can be free to creatively express yourself through song.

What does this mean?

Don’t forget to sing!


And remember…

The only reason for mastering technique is to make sure the body does not prevent the soul from expressing itself.
